I'm New Here
Depending on where you’re coming from, walking into a new church can be a daunting experience. Whether you are exploring Christianity, Episcopalians, or just looking for a church home, you probably have a few questions.
Here are answers to some of the questions asked most often:
What is the style of this church?
Well, Our Saviour is an Episcopal church, which means questions (about everything!) are welcome. The service itself (called a Eucharist) is pretty easy to follow and there’s even a bulletin (a program) to tell everybody what’s happening. We sing, we pray, we consecrate bread and wine as the representation of Jesus present among us (also known as Holy Communion). People who have been baptized and wish to receive the bread and wine come forward to do so. Those who have not been baptized or who choose not to receive, often come forward as well to receive a special blessing from the priest.
Are small children welcome?
They are! There’s Christian Activity for pre-Kindergarten children during the first half of the service, with children re-joining their parents during the announcements midway through. Often, parents prefer to keep infants and small children with them during the service and that’s just fine. We actually like children and no one will stare at you if yours make noise. Needless to say, if your child becomes “fussy” or makes you uncomfortable at some point, there are quiet places for a time-out, but there is no need to worry.
How long does the service last?
The normal Sunday Eucharist lasts about one hour. Afterwards you are welcome to join us for coffee hour in the parish hall.
What should I wear?
Whatever seems decent to you. Some members of the congregation wear their traditional “Sunday Best,” others prefer to stay casual – especially if they’ve dressed up all week. We’ll welcome you either way.
When should I come?
Any Sunday. The service begins at 930am.
Where can I park?
There are spots immediately in front of the church and across the street on Flanagan Way, including handicapped spots. It’s also possible to park on Second between Flanagan Way and Front Street and you will see parking spaces available on all surrounding streets.
Where do I enter the church?
Come up the front steps and through the red doors. Someone will welcome you and make sure you have a bulletin and anything else you need for the service. We are handicapped accessible.
